Privacy Laws & Business Journal: Cyber attack puts charity trustees’ duties under the spotlight

Cyber Intelligence Director Mark Tibbs, Associate Molly Hunter and Data Protection Advisor Jon Baines recently wrote an article for Privacy Laws & Business journal. The article discusses the importance for charities to conduct risk analyses to understand the appropriate level of security required by taking adequate steps to protect the charities’ computer networks.

This was in light of a successful cyber-attack that took place in 2016, which compromised the computer network of a charity called The British and Foreign Bible society (the society). In May 2018, the ICO served the society with a monetary penalty (sometimes referred to as a “fine”) of £100,000, and noted that the society’s failings had left many of its supporters open to financial or identity fraud, as well as exposing their religious belief.

The Cyber security Breaches survey 2018 found that 73% of the surveyed charities with annual incomes of more than £5 million had fallen victim to cyber attacks or breaches in the last year.
